Thanks to all competitors for participating in the second annual P-Team World Mountain Running Championships. This year we had 17 competitors, up from last year's 13. Also this year we had our first female competitors – great stuff Tina and Della! And thanks to Nev and Jimbo for officiating.
It was a great atmosphere out there with some fantastic moments. As Joseph notes on the NZRun.com message board: "lots of anorexic looking runner girls turned up to watch from the sidelines, which made for an unncanny scene. large pie-eating men on one side and giggling waif spectators on the other". Hughesy - if you stopped giggling next year, you might eat your pie a bit quicker.
A number of records were broken this year, probably due to the pies being warm. Breaking the 1-minute barrier for the pie/beer scull was Glen V8 Wallis. Tim Hodge set a new course record, smashing the old record of 38:52 by nearly 3 minutes, to record 36:00. Glen Hughes wasn't far behind for 37:56. Tina Harris became the inaugural women's champion, with a time of 53:53, holding out Della Laird.
Some highlights: seeing Tina having her first spew at about 400 metres; Edwin streaking the whole way from the radar station to the wind turbine (although having to run behind him for a couple of minutes was a lowlight); the great effort by a-team runners to get out there (including Joseph from WHAC).
Great effort guys. Photos will appear as I receive them.
Ideas for next year's event were floated on Saturday night but the only change I am likely to make is a return to the cold pie. Although I am considering a similar concept to the world champs alternate years of uphill/undulating with alternate years of warm pie/cold pie.
Cheers, Karl.
